What is facebook? What is Twitter?

Twitter and Facebook are websites designed to improve and innovate online communication. They can be used to broadcast messages online, and are not primarily designed to keep communication private. In fact various people have slipped up by adding messages on twitter and facebook which include people sending poorly thought out messages which come back to bite them.

When used properly, Twitter and Facebook are powerful tools to allow people to connect with each other, and more recently to allow businesses to connect with potential customers online.

So who should be using Facebook and Twitter?

Well in the context of catching up with friends online, any person can sign up for a Facebook or Twitter account and start typing. In the context of a business communicating with customers online, any business that has something to say should have a facebook or twitter account.

An example would be a Heliski company posting descriptions and pictures of the current skiing conditions on the mountains. This is useful and compelling content for anyone thinking about doing a Heliski. Even if your business is an icecream van, you can be telling people your route or new flavours of ice cream.

Facebook and Twitter (and other social media platforms) take time and effort to maintain, but used properly they can be highly effective tools to not only connect with customers but give your
business an online personality. Some excellent examples of this is are Harris Mountains Heliski and Alpine Heliski who maintain up to date and informative Facebook pages.

Check your Inbound links and Referring links

So here’s a Handy Tip for your on-line business, one of the most time consuming SEO tactics but also one of the most valuable is inbound links and Referring links that point towards your website.

It takes a volume of time and effort to get contacts through a network of marketing to obtain inbound links and swap with what we call ‘Reciprocal Linking‘. So you work out a deal with another company that isn’t in a conflict of interest with yours and place a link on your website pointing to theirs and vice – versa. BUT you must check everything before and after the deal.

Certain problems can happen if you don’t. You have to make sure that all of the link information that you provide is correct not just in what it says or the spelling but also the code.

It is of great importance that the link text (or called the Anchor text) that you use from the other side is keyword rich and is placed correctly with the code when getting a referral from a website.

for instance if you have an inbound reciprocal from a website to yours and your main business is ‘paragliding’ then the Link Text should be ‘Paragliding Trips Queenstown’.

Now the next thing is to make sure that the link text and the URL do not contain any problems with invalid characters in the URL. A problem that can happen is that a ‘Space’ is used after entering the URL and then entering the code for the Link Text.

Example: <a href=”http://www.paragliding.wuz   ”>paragliding trips queenstown</a>

Here’s the thing the space is actually a problem, even though most browsers will pick up such a simple mistake and correct it so as the link works at pointing at your website, the problem comes from the Search Engine Bots who don’t take kindly to mistakes at all and this can effect the power of the Link itself especially when you get marked up inside the rankings if your inbound link is keyword rich and comes from a good source and is correct in the coding. So instead of getting an ‘A’ on the report card you get a ‘C’ so to speak.

So run some checks and analyse the links not just on their sites pointing to you but on your site pointing to them and get it fixed asap.

It really is the key to performance in the engines to get your business up and in the running of your share of that market.

Oh Yes it is :)

Toshiba – We Love Stories

We recently worked on a project for Toshiba Europe with London based agency cScape.

We Love Stories is a viral video competition that began last year in the UK. The interest was so high that this year it has been launched to schools across Europe too.

We worked on the website, which is built on the WordPress platform. The design was inline with the Toshiba 2011 campaign that will hit the TV screens in Europe in the new year. The idea is that submitted videos will be judged on certain criteria, one of which is the amount of social media heat they can attract.

Uses can go online and vote via vimeo channels, scribd, Facebook and other platforms.

Last year the videos were of an exceptional high standard so it will be interesting to see what kind of interest they generate this year. Go to the site and check it out.
